Dental crowns are a form of restorative dentistry that help to protect your tooth from further damage.

Dental crowns are also used for cosmetic procedures. Main Street Dental Arts may recommend placing a crown in the following circumstances:

  • To preserve a tooth that is already damaged by decay or has slight cracks
  • As coverage for a dental implant
  • To protect the tooth after a root canal
  • As a means to connect bridge work
  • To improve your bite
  • To improve the appearance of one or more teeth that are discolored, misshapen, or misaligned

What to Expect When Receiving a Dental Crown

Receiving a dental crown typically involves two separate appointments. During the first appointment, the dentist numbs the tooth and the area surrounding it. They then proceed to shape the tooth receiving the crown. The last step at this appointment is for the dentist to take a digital scan of the tooth with ITERO. The scan is then sent electronically to the laboratory to immediately begin fabrication.. Your permanent dental crown should be ready in approximately two weeks. When you return for your second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown, places the permanent crown, checks the margins, contacts, and occlusion (bite) and asks you to look over the shape and color. After you give your approval, they places the crown in your mouth with a permanent cement.

The Benefits of Choosing Porcelain Dental Crowns

Advances in dental technology mean that today’s patients have more choices than ever before when it comes to dental procedures. Crowns are no exception. All-porcelain or porcelain-fused-to metal crowns both make excellent choices for people who are concerned about their dental work looking as natural as possible. Of all dental crown types, those made of porcelain are the easiest to match to the existing color shade of your teeth. They are also an excellent alternative for people with allergies to metal. The Main Street Dental Arts team can provide you with feedback about which type of porcelain dental crown is most appropriate for your specific situation.

How long do porcelain dental crowns last?

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, porcelain crowns can last 10 to 15 years or even longer. Factors such as grinding your teeth (bruxism), biting hard objects, and overall dental care can impact their longevity. Dr. Jackson will assess your crown during routine checkups to ensure it stays strong and functional.

Are porcelain crowns a good option for front teeth?

Yes! Porcelain crowns are an excellent choice for restoring front teeth because they closely match the color and translucency of natural enamel. They provide a highly aesthetic, durable solution for teeth that are chipped, cracked, discolored, or misshapen, offering a seamless and natural-looking smile.
